Haryana Bird Checklist

Bill Harvey, Tim Inskipp and Suresh C. Sharma

Second update – June 2003

The first online Haryana State checklist was published on www.delhibird.org in June 2001. It was updated in April 2002 by Bill and Suresh. This is the most comprehensive update and includes a full bibliography prepared by Tim. Only records with reasonable substantiation are included, although there are a few, mainly old records, that would benefit from confirmation. The status information remains a tentative assessment and is based on our current knowledge. It may not be accurate for the whole state. Additional records since the first edition come from a deeper search of the literature for historical records, some more recent vagrants and the results of much better coverage of the north-eastern hill forests at Kalesar and Morni. This update brings the State total to 527 species, including recent “splits” and potential “splits”.

Note that many recent records have not been published in detail but have been reported (with varying degrees of description) on www.delhibird.org  the website of the Northern India Bird Network. They are included if they appear within the bounds of possibility, particularly in the light of records from neighbouring states. The initials of the reporters of such records are included in the Status column and their full names appear at the end of this Checklist.

GT = globally threatened, GNT = globally near threatened   * = historical (pre 1970) records only
